Vocal Ministry
In the most mystical experience of Quaker worship, we find ourselves standing and speaking without forethought, clearly delivering a message from the Holy Spirit. Some Friends report a shaking sensation before they rise, or an inner voice directing them.
Other times, we consider speaking and have doubts. We ponder long and hard whether to break the silence – “Should I speak?” “Should I hold my peace?”
What follows is a set of queries to consider; if your answer to any of the following queries is “No,” perhaps it would be best to settle back into silent, centering worship for the time being.
Queries to consider:
- Do you sense your message arises from the Light within you?
- Will your message be easy to distinguish from political rhetoric, pontification or announcements?
- Are you certain this message isn’t meant for you alone?
- Are you certain this message is not primarily in response to the last speaker?
- Will your message enhance the work the Light has already done in the meeting?
- Have you allowed time to give the previous messages full and profound reflection?
- Is this moment and meeting for worship the most appropriate venue for your message?
- Are you compelled to speak?
If you answer “No” to any of the preceding queries, please settle back into centering worship where clearness may come.
If your answer to all of these queries is “Yes,” stand and Speak.
